The gynaecologic ultrasound
The gynaecologic ultrasound aims to check the uterus, the endometrium and the ovaries. It is usually performed trans-vaginally as the trans-vaginal route offers better imaging. However, if necessary (for example to young girls who have no intimate relationships), the test can be done trans-abdominally but with some limitations in the sharpness of the imaging.
The test is painless lasts a few minutes and is performed on an empty bladder. The test results are available immediately.
Gynaecologic ultrasound imaging can diagnose benign tumours of the uterus such as uterine fibroids and monitor their progress, ovarian tumours and diseases of the endometrium (the lining of the uterus).
We can also monitor the maturation of follicles in women experiencing fertility problems or being treated to induce ovulation.
The simple gynaecologic ultrasound may need to be enriched with information about blood flow to specific organs (such as the ovaries in case of cysts) and this is done by using the special colour ultrasound imaging Doppler. This test helps us to distinguish the most suspicious for malignancy tumours.
Finally, the three-dimensional gynaecologic ultrasound helps us to illustrate particular congenital abnormalities of the uterus (such as the bicornuate uterus) and endometrial diseases (such as polyps or uterine fibroids growing inside the uterus).
